Staten Island weather

What wears out chimneys on the island

Freeze-thaw winters

Water soaks into brick and mortar, freezes, expands and pops the faces off bricks. Each winter makes cracks wider.

Nor'easters and wind-driven rain

Sideways rain finds every gap in flashing and crowns, and shows up as stains on ceilings and walls.

Salt air along the shore

Homes near Midland Beach, South Beach and Great Kills see faster mortar erosion and rusting caps.

Oil-to-gas boiler conversions

Gas exhaust is wetter and more acidic. In an unlined or old clay flue it can eat away at the mortar from the inside.

FAQ

Chimney & masonry questions

Need a straight answer about your house? Call (929) 629-8791.

How often should my chimney be swept and inspected?

The national fire safety standard, NFPA 211, recommends having chimneys, fireplaces and vents inspected at least once a year. Sweeping is done when the inspection finds creosote or debris building up, which for regular wood burners is usually every year.

Why is water leaking around my chimney?

The usual causes are worn or loose flashing where the chimney meets the roof, a cracked crown, a missing cap, or porous brick and mortar soaking up rain. We trace the source before repairing so the fix actually stops the leak.

Do I need a chimney liner if I convert my boiler from oil to gas?

Often, yes. Gas appliances produce cooler, wetter exhaust that can damage an unlined or deteriorated clay flue. A stainless steel liner sized for the new appliance helps it vent properly. We inspect the flue and tell you what your setup needs.

What is tuckpointing and when do I need it?

Tuckpointing, also called repointing, means grinding out old, crumbling mortar and replacing it with new mortar. If you can scrape mortar out with a key, see gaps between bricks, or notice sand at the base of a wall, it's time.

Why are the faces of my bricks flaking off?

That's called spalling. Water gets into the brick, freezes in winter and pushes the surface off. Damaged bricks should be replaced and the water source fixed, or it keeps spreading.

Do you repair stoops and front steps?

Yes. We repair and rebuild brick and block stoops, steps and porches, from loose treads and cracked risers to full rebuilds.

What are your hours?

We're open Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 7 PM, and closed on Sundays.
